The Maritime Heritage Project ~~ International Harbors Travel
Arrived on the SS Oregon, September 6, 1852
Beale Street in San Francisco was named for Lieutenant Edward F. Beale, United States Navy.
Beale took an active part in the conquest of California serving as Lieutenant with the California battalion; later he was a surveyor-general of the state and at one time United States minister to Austria.
(The Beginnings of San Francisco, Vol. II, Zoeth Eldridge, 1912; pg. 740). Also notes that Lt. Beale was with Kit Carson at San Diego behind the enemy lines in December, 1846.
Beale was also prominent at the time of the "conquest," having been appointed Indian Agent.
