Frightful Casualty in New York City - Trial of Mr. Thrasher, at Havana - Democratic Caucus at Washington City - Later from the Far West - Famine on the shores of Lake Superior, &c. &c. &c.
The P.M.S. Co. steamship Northerner, Capt. Randall, arrived at her wharf at 10 o'clock last evening, bringing passengers and dates to the 1st December, from New York. The following is a record of the Northerner's trip, furnished by Purser Meyer:
Sailed from Panama 11 P.M., Dec. 18th; passed P.M.S. Golden Gate at 4:30 P.M. 25 miles east of Quibe Island on the 17th; arrived at Acapulco, 8 A.M. 23rd Dec.; found steamship Republic in a leaky condition, passengers on shore; the leak was discovered and stopped before our leaving, but was detained by request of passengers to be accompanied by steamer Panama, which was hourly expected. The screw steamer McKim was in port coaling, to sail as soon as coaled; she had a full load of passengers.
Left Acapulco at 5 P.M. the 23d inst.; at 10:30 same day passed steamer Panama, bound in; on the 24th, at 4 P.M., saw screw steamer Monumental City bound down. At 11:30P.M. on the 30th De. Arrived at San Diego; found steamer Gold Hunter coaling; she left half an hour after our arrival. AT 10:30 left for San Diego; passed steamer Gold Hunter in Santa Barbara channel 4 P.M. At 12-1/2 P.M. arrived at Monterey, sailed at 1 P.M. 14 days, 20 hours from Panama. Departed Panama at 11:00 p.m. on December 16, 1851.
The Northerner was detained at Panama in consequence of a freshet on the Chagres River, which prevented the mails and passengers crossing in the usual time. The freshet caused much loss of property at Cruces and other towns on the river. The Northerner experienced head winds and gales of wind for three days after leaving Cape St. Lucas; but has made the run through inside of fifteen days.
