Upon arrival of the Antelope, the Alta California noted that:
In New York the arrival of three steamships in one day would be a matter deserving of particular mention, and in any other city on the Atlantic such an occurrence would be heralded as unprecedented. The commerce of San Francisco is increasing marvellously and it would be difficult to predict what a few short months may bring forth. That we shall communicate by steamers with the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and China is almost a certainty.
