The California

became president and manager of the firm.
In 1863, Mighell purchased the first

tug, which was built as
Monitor in 1862 by Eden Landing, San
Francisco, Calif.; purchased by the Navy from William Mighell 20 April
1863; renamed
Monterey 18 May 1863: and placed in service the
same day.
In 1900, The California Shipping Co. was rated as the most extensive owner
of sailing vessels in the world.
Other principal stockholders included W. J. Gray, Roth, Blum & Co.,
Charles Boudrow, John Dolbeer, Bennett & Goodall, E. Kentfield, and
Pope & Talbot.
Editor's Note: Additional information on Captain Mighell's life, including
sketches of hisc home built in Berkeley in an area settled by several
noted sea captains of the day are to be found on the Berkeley
Architectural Heritage Association (BAHA) site site, which is well
worth a visit.
