May 25, 1852
Clipper Northern Light
Captain Bailey Loring
From Acapulco, Mexico

Passage

Northern Light was a medium clipper launched on September 25, 1851, from the South Boston shipyard of H.O. Briggs. She was designed by Samuel Harte Pook and said to be very sharp below the waterline. She had a deadrise of 40 inches. The Northern Light was 1021 tons, 171 x 36 x 21 feet. Her figurehead was that of an angel dressed in flowing drapery with one hand bearing a torch with a golden flame extended overhead.

25 days from Acapulco, Mexico.

On May 4, 1852, a passenger, Jacob Henly, died of congestion of the brain. He was 24 years of age and from Ohio. On May 7, 1852, a passenger, John Odwell, of Colchester, Delaware County, New York, died of inflammation of the bowels. He was 37 years of age.

Moored at Cunningham's Wharf.

Meeting of Passengers.
At a meeting of the passengers of the barque Isabel, held on board the Northern Light, Mr. George Bramall in the chair, on their passage to San Francisco, the following preamble and resolutions were passed unanimously:
Whereas we, passengers from Panama on the barque Isabel bound to San Francisco, being on the 3d of March last, through the short-sightedness or rascality of the owners and captain, thrown into Acapulco in distress, and cast upon our own resources there until the 23d of April following, and but for the providential aid from the citizens of San Francisco, bestowed upon us through the Relief Committee of the wrecked North America's passengers, must have been in extreme distress for want of necessary means of subsistence; therefore

Resolved, That to the citizens of San Francisco and Acapulco, for their beneficence in so opportunely rendering assistance to fellow being in distress, we owe a deep debt of gratitude, and hereby beg them to accept our many heartfelt thanks.

Resolved, That in Thomas Hunt, Esq., and Capt. Spinney, of New York, and others of the first Committee of Relief for the North America's passengers, we found men who could truly commiserate our condition, and in consideration of the promptness and willingness with which they bestowed upon us materials aid, hereby tender our most sincere thanks.

Resolved, That Mr. Bill, agent at Acapulco of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co., and Capt. Tyler, to whose generous exertions we chiefly owe the good fortune of a passage to San Francisco on the Northern Light, merit much gratitude and respect, in pursuance of which we cheerfully vote our thanks.
Resolved, That Mr. Fuller, the English consul at Acapulco, for many acts of kindness and exertions in our behalf, is entitled to our gratitude, regard and sincere thanks, which we cheerfully give.

Resolved, That Dr. Powell, for his services so skillfully, generously, and gratuitously bestowed to our sick and unfortunate fellow passengers immediately upon his arrival at Acapulco, and during the passage from thence, we offer our grateful and sincere thanks, the only remuneration that in our unfortunate condition we are able to give.

Resolved, That to Capt. Loring and officers of the ship Northern Light, we tender our thanks for their gentlemanly deportment towards us while on their ship.

Resolved, That the above Preamble and Resolutions be published in the Alta California and San Francisco Herald.
