SS Columbus
Captain E.H. Hitchcock
From Panama
Passage:
Alta California, December 7, 1850
The steamship Columbus, Captain. E.H. Hitchcock, arrived last night about 11 oclock, from Panama, whence she sailed on the 16th of November, at 9 oclock in the morning. The Columbus brought no mail, although it was upon the Isthmus, the Consul declining her offer to do so, preferring to detain it for the Carolina.
We were kindly furnished by a passenger on the Columbus, with a couple of letters from Mr. Gilbert, a copy of the New York Tribune, of the 28th of Oct., the latest date received, and a list of passengers.
The Columbus brought up 95 passengers, among whom we notice
the names of Rt. Rev. Francis Villarasu, Rev. Joseph Alemany and sister,
Mary Goesnerd. The C. arrived at Acapulco on the 24th of Nov.
at 10 oclock, A.M., left the same day at half past 5 P.M., leaving
in port the steamers New Orleans and Antelope.
On the 26th of November, in lat. 18 35 N., long. 104 W., she passed
a steamer showing lights, bound to the southward and eastward.
From the 29th she experienced heavy head winds, accompanied by a rough
sea
. . . The Dominican government was making great preparations to repel
the Haytiens under the negro Emperor, Faustin the I., who was about
to invade them.
