IMPORTANT FOREIGN NEWS
The rainy season closed on the 1st Dec., consequently the road and river were in excellent condition.
The Brother Jonathan brings about 350 passengers, among whom are Mr. Wiska Hauser, the distinguished violinist, accompanied by Mr. Layenu, the celebrated composer and director.
Left San Juan del Sud at 5 o’clock P. M. on the 20th ult. Laid to twelve hours in the Gulf of Tehuantepec during a severe gale.
Wells, Fargo & Co. were first to furnish us with papers by the Jonathan.
The domestic news is quite unimportant. There is highly interesting intelligence from England.
Owing to the meagerness of our dispatches thus far received, the summary of news we present is necessarily imperfect.
The clipper ships Houqua and Sea Serpent arrived at New York Jan. 3d, the former 107 days, the latter 90 days from Canton. A beautiful clipper, the Star of the Union, named in compliment to the genius of Daniel Webster, is loading at New York for this port, in J. Ogden’s line of clippers.
The steamship Albatross is advertised at New York for Vera Cruz to take passengers and letters for California via Acapulco. It is not however stated what the facilities are for the land travel on the route.
A Washington correspondent of the N. Y. Herald writes that Billy Bowlegs and his followers have determined not to fulfill their treaty stipulations to leave Florida. Having gathered all the arms they could procure, they have disappeared in the swamps. Another bloody war will probably be the consequence.
